Making Health Care Work

What's New

THIS COULD BE THE YEAR — President Obama has pledged to put our health care on the road to recovery by the end of the year. Will our representatives support his plan? Will drug companies and HMOs block reform?

Overview

Health care costs have doubled over the last decade. The average job-based family insurance plan costs more than $12,000 a year and is expected to double by 2016.

Our country’s health care system is structured to profit the drug industry, insurance companies, and medical specialty businesses, not to better health care for American families.

NMPIRG will be fighting for health care reform legislation that:

• Cuts costs by reducing red tape and overhead through simplified insurance forms, information technology and insurer-efficiency standards.

• Stops insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions.

• Gives doctors the most up-to-date information on which treatments and medicines work best.

• Gives Americans without job-based coverage the option of a public health insurance plan.

450,000 DOCTORS CAN'T BE WRONG—But the doctors, health care professionals and Congresspeople working for health care reform need your help. They are up against industry lobbyists spending millions.
