Winning Concrete Results

Cleaning Up Dirty Politics

In January 2007, Congress passed an ethics reform bill to ban certain gifts and travel paid for by lobbyists. After the Abramoff, Ney and Cunningham scandals, NMPIRG worked to promote lobby reform.

Alerting Parents To Dangerous Toys

In November 2004, U.S. PIRG published its annual survey of unsafe toys, prompting six enforcement actions by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Over the last 19 years, the report has resulted in at least 100 recalls and other enforcement actions, and spurred passage of a toy safety labeling law in 1994.

Stopping Identity Theft

In the wake of nationwide failures in data security on the part of data dealers and credit card companies, NMPIRG consumer advocates crafted model legislation that was enacted in two dozen states. Our work continues to expand protections and stop federal laws from undercutting state laws.

Standing Up To Prescription Drug Companies

Prescription drug companies are making it harder and harder for families to afford the medicines they need. To help New Mexicans get a better deal, NMPIRG worked in 2005 to expand the state's SenioRX and bulk purchasing programs to all New Mexicans.

Challenging Predatory Lenders

To protect the most vulnerable consumers, NMPIRG has joined the AARP, the Department of Defense and Navajo chapters to fight predatory lending.

Revitalizing Democracy

In the 2004 and 2006, elections NMPIRG's New Voters Project registered over 25,000 young people to vote. Part of a nationwide drive led by state PIRGs across the country, the effort resulted in the largest youth voter mobilization campaign in U.S. history.

In 2005, NMPIRG worked to expand the state's SenioRX and bulk purchasing programs to all New Mexicans.

NMPIRG’s toy safety reports have led to at least 100 recalls and other enforcement actions over the past 19 years.

NMPIRG serves as a watchdog for democracy, both at the statehouse in Santa Fe and in Washington, D.C. Our efforts recently helped to pass a critical federal ethics reform bill.
